Note to self #4
Hail and well met. It is about time for another, note to self. Things have been busy and hectic and chaotic. As you all know — unless you’re from Vanuatu — Pakistan is going through another cataclysm. It always does and it always will, that’s what makes it home for me.
Anyways, note to self: I have been thinking of buy a new phone and Google has been thinking of making a new one. No, not for me.
It would be quite interesting to see what the search engine Goliath will come up with. According to the BBC, “Google has formed an alliance with 33 firms to develop an open platform for mobile phones, called Android.” Interesting name, according to wiki, the word means, An android is a robot designed to resemble a human, usually both in appearance and behavior. I wonder if that means that it’ll look like a phone, be a phone, but be something better? The people at Symbian don’t think so. “Google lacked experience,” John Forsyth commented to the BBC. He is the Vice President of Strategy at Symbian and he goes on to say that Google had to be aware that making a “mobile OS is a very specialised form of rocket science. It’s not search rocket science.” Poignant words that I’m sure Google is well aware of.
Now, I love books. And I love Amazon. I love the fact Amazon loves to tell me which books to buy. But now, Amazon is telling me I don’t need a book to read a story. For $399 I can own the Amazon Kindle, an electronic palm held device with a built in modem, which not only lets me read books, it also downloads them for me. A built in slot allows for the use of SD Cards that can hold anywhere from 1GB to 4GB and beyond. By itself it can hold up to 200 titles, though the card can make it hold much more than just books: it can also hold audio books for you to listen to. But the killer of course — like most electronic devices — is the battery life. But anyways, do you really need a harsh cold, lifeless device to tell you a story? Where’s the fun in reading, when you don’t have a page to turn over? Give me a light source and a good book any day of the week I say.
Until next time, folks.
